Trees contribute to to the aesthetics of your yard. Like most plants, they require maintenance to keep them healthy. They also need to be monitored so that they don’t pose a threat to your home or your neighbor’s property. Here are a 6 tips for maintaining your trees.
Water Effectively When Maintaining Your Trees
Younger trees are more at risk during a drought. Without enough water, they can die. During the summer season, water younger trees deeply so the water reaches their roots. In the winter, the trees don’t require as much water, unless they were recently planted.
Use Mulch
Mulch helps trees thrive and remain healthy. Maintaining your trees includes adding mulch around their trunks. Mulch also boosts the curb appeal of your property. Apply 3-4 inches of mulch, 4-6 inches away from the bottom of the tree. Mulch should extend out to a diameter of four to five feet for mature trees.
Maintaining Your Trees Includes Pruning
Pruning may be necessary to prevent trees from becoming a liability. It is best to prune when the trees are dormant to prevent stress and disease. Use tools that are made for tree pruning, or hire a professional who knows how to do the job safely.
Protect the Bark
Protecting the tree bark is also important because the bark protects the tree from the elements and pests. Damage to the bark can lead to fungal or bacterial infections and rotting. Keep lawn equipment, like weed whackers, away from tree trunks. Make sure your lawn sprinklers aren’t directly spraying the trunk. If you see vines starting to grow up the tree’s bark, remove them and pull the vines up from the roots.
Maintain Your Trees with Healthy Soil
The health of the tree’s roots will determine how well it thrives. Fertilizing around trees during spring improves the quality of the soil. The soil shouldn’t be compacted, which can prevent water and oxygen from reaching the roots. Avoid driving over areas where there are tree roots underground.
Know What Species of Trees You Have
Knowing what each tree on your property needs is necessary to help them remain healthy. Learn what type of trees you have in your yard. By knowing the species, you can determine if they’re vulnerable to droughts, require extra watering, or have specific pruning needs.
